Worksop is the largest town in Bassetlaw, in the far north of Nottinghamshire, and the base for Bassetlaw District Council at Queen's Buildings. It sits on the A57 close to the A1, with a railway station on the line between Sheffield and Lincoln, and those road links have made it a significant location for distribution and manufacturing. Much of that activity is concentrated at Manton Wood and other industrial estates around the edge of the town.

The town has had to adapt to big changes. Like the rest of north Nottinghamshire it was shaped by coal mining, and more recently it lost one of its best-known employers when Wilko, which had its headquarters and main distribution centre in Worksop, went into administration in 2023. Worksop is also known as the gateway to the Dukeries, the area of great estates that includes Clumber Park, now run by the National Trust.
