## WordPress problems we fix every week

WordPress powers a huge share of the web: W3Techs measured it at around 41.5% of all websites in July 2026. That popularity means the same faults show up again and again, and we know the usual causes.

- **Critical error / white screen of death:** almost always a PHP fatal error from a plugin or theme. We read the error log or enable *WP_DEBUG_LOG*, identify the culprit, and disable or patch it, often through recovery mode or by renaming its folder over SFTP.

- **Stuck maintenance mode:** an interrupted update leaves a *.maintenance* file in the site root. We remove it and finish the update properly.

- **Database connection errors:** wrong credentials in *wp-config.php*, a crashed table, or the database server being down at the host.

- **Memory exhausted errors:** raising *WP_MEMORY_LIMIT* sometimes helps, but we also look for the plugin causing the bloat.

- **Mixed content and SSL warnings:** old http:// links in the database after an SSL change, fixed with a careful search and replace that respects serialised data. See [SSL certificate support](https://dijitulsupport.co.uk/ssl-certificate-support/).

- **Forms not sending:** usually PHP mail being blocked or flagged as spam. We set up authenticated SMTP and check SPF and DKIM. See [website forms not working](https://dijitulsupport.co.uk/website-forms-not-working/).

## Plugin updates without breaking the site

Plugins are where most WordPress risk sits. Patchstack's State of WordPress Security report found 91% of the 11,334 new WordPress ecosystem vulnerabilities disclosed in 2025 were in plugins, and 46% had no patch available at the time they were disclosed. So you cannot just leave updates, but blind auto-updates cause their own outages.

Our process on every plan:

- Full backup of files and database.

- Update WordPress core, plugins and themes, paying attention to major version jumps in page builders, WooCommerce and premium plugins with expired licences.

- Check the home page, key landing pages, forms and checkout.

- Roll back anything that misbehaves and find a fix.

We also look for abandoned plugins that have been closed on WordPress.org, nulled premium plugins (a common malware source) and duplicate plugins doing the same job. More on this at [plugin update support](https://dijitulsupport.co.uk/plugin-update-support/).

## PHP upgrades, hosting and speed

Hosts regularly withdraw old PHP versions. A site built in 2018 on PHP 7.2 may throw deprecation warnings or fatal errors on PHP 8.2 or 8.3 because of removed functions, stricter type handling or old theme code. We test the upgrade on a staging copy first, fix incompatible code or replace outdated plugins, then switch the live site. See [PHP version upgrade](https://dijitulsupport.co.uk/php-version-upgrade/).

Slow WordPress sites usually come down to too many plugins, a heavy page builder, unoptimised images, no page caching or cheap shared hosting. We profile the site, tidy the database (old revisions, expired transients, autoloaded options), set up caching and image compression, and work on [Core Web Vitals](https://dijitulsupport.co.uk/core-web-vitals-fixes/). ## Hacked WordPress sites

Typical signs: Japanese or pharma spam pages in Google, redirects on mobile only, admin users you did not create, or a warning from your host. We take the site offline if needed, find the entry point (often an outdated plugin or a reused password), remove malware from files and the database, replace core files with clean copies, reset salts and passwords, and harden the install. Then we request a review in Google Search Console if the site was flagged.

## FAQs

### How do I fix "There has been a critical error on this website"?

That message means a PHP fatal error, usually from a plugin or theme. Check the email WordPress sends to the admin address for a recovery mode link, or disable plugins by renaming the plugins folder over SFTP. dijitul can diagnose and fix it from £45 an hour + VAT.

### Should I turn on WordPress auto-updates?

Auto-updates for minor core releases are sensible. For plugins, auto-updates close security holes quickly but can break a site with nobody watching. dijitul's Essential plan at £25 a month + VAT applies updates with a backup first and checks the site afterwards.

### Which PHP version should my WordPress site use?

Use a PHP 8 version that is still receiving security support from php.net and that your theme and plugins are tested with. Old PHP 7 versions no longer get security fixes. dijitul tests upgrades on a staging copy before switching your live site.

### Can you support a WordPress site built with Elementor or Divi?

Yes. dijitul supports sites built with Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, Beaver Builder and the WordPress block editor. Page builder updates are among the riskiest, so we back up first and check layouts afterwards.

### Do you need my hosting login to support WordPress?

Ideally yes. An administrator login handles most updates, but hosting or SFTP access lets dijitul fix errors when wp-admin itself is broken, read server error logs, check PHP settings and restore backups if an update goes wrong.

### Can you take over WordPress support from another agency?

Yes. dijitul takes a full backup, audits plugins, themes, PHP version and licences, and flags anything risky. You keep ownership of your site and logins throughout the handover and afterwards.
