Charities face the same threats with fewer resources

Small charities hold sensitive data, donor details, safeguarding records and bank access, often looked after by volunteers in their spare time. According to the UK Government's Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026, 28% of charities reported a breach or attack in the previous year, phishing affected 25%, and only 38% used two-factor authentication.

dijitul support gives charities the same practical support we give small businesses, explained in plain English for trustees, staff and volunteers. For IT across a charity office, see IT support for charities.

Microsoft 365 and Google for nonprofits

Microsoft changed its nonprofit offers in 2025. The free Microsoft 365 Business Premium and Office 365 E1 grants were discontinued from 1 July 2025, taking effect at each organisation's next renewal. Eligible nonprofits can still get up to 300 free Microsoft 365 Business Basic licences and discounts on paid plans, including Business Premium.

That leaves many charities with a decision: move to Business Basic, which covers email, Teams and web versions of Office, or pay a discounted price for Business Premium, which adds desktop apps, Intune and Defender for Business. We review who needs what, often a mix, and handle the licence change without losing email.

Google Workspace for Nonprofits is also available free to eligible charities. We can set up either platform, or migrate between them. See Microsoft 365 support.

Volunteer accounts and data protection

Shared logins are common in charities and cause real problems: no MFA, no record of who did what, and no way to remove one person's access. We set up individual accounts where they matter, use free Business Basic licences or shared mailboxes for volunteers, apply sensible SharePoint permissions so safeguarding and HR files are restricted, and create a simple process for removing access when volunteers leave. See GDPR IT compliance for encryption and breach response.

Websites, donations and Google Ad Grants

  • Websites: updates, backups, security and fixes for WordPress and other platforms, often inherited from a volunteer. Our Essential plan at £25 a month + VAT covers updates, daily backups and monitoring.
  • Donations: fixing donation forms and integrations with Stripe, PayPal, JustGiving or Enthuse, plus Gift Aid declaration fields that capture what HMRC needs. See online payments support.
  • Google Ad Grants: eligible charities can receive up to US$10,000 a month in Google Search advertising. Accounts must follow programme rules, including keeping a 5% click-through rate and having conversion tracking set up. We help set up the account, connect GA4 key events and fix suspended Ad Grant accounts. See Google Ads support.
  • Google Business Profile: getting your charity shop or centre showing correctly on Maps.

Help for trustees

Trustees are responsible for the charity's risks, including cyber risk, but many are not technical. We can give your board a short, plain-English summary of where the charity stands: which accounts have MFA, whether backups are tested, who has access to the bank and donor data, and what the main gaps are, with costs for fixing each one. The NCSC's free Cyber Security Small Charity Guide is a good companion document, and we can map your setup against its five areas. This gives trustees something concrete to minute, act on and review together again each year.

Pricing for charities

We use the same clear pricing for charities as for businesses: Essential at £25 a month + VAT, Business at £50 a month + VAT with 1 hour of fixes, and Complete at £99 a month + VAT with 3 hours plus IT and Microsoft 365 helpdesk for staff and volunteers. One-off jobs are £45 an hour + VAT. Larger projects, such as a Microsoft 365 migration or new website, are quoted upfront so trustees can approve a fixed figure before any work begins. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Do charities still get free Microsoft 365?

Partly. Microsoft discontinued the free Business Premium and Office 365 E1 grants from 1 July 2025, effective at each nonprofit's next renewal. Eligible charities can still get up to 300 free Microsoft 365 Business Basic licences and discounts on paid plans. dijitul can review which licences each person needs.

What is Google Ad Grants?

Google Ad Grants gives eligible charities up to US$10,000 a month of free Google Search advertising. Accounts must meet programme rules, such as maintaining a 5% click-through rate and tracking conversions. dijitul helps set up the account, connect GA4 tracking and recover suspended Ad Grant accounts.

How much does tech support for a charity cost?

dijitul charges charities the same transparent prices as businesses: plans at £25, £50 or £99 a month + VAT, or £45 an hour + VAT for one-off help. Larger projects like migrations or new websites are quoted upfront so trustees can approve a fixed cost.

How can a small charity improve its cyber security?

Start with two-factor authentication on email and banking, individual accounts instead of shared logins, updated devices and tested backups. According to the Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026, only 38% of charities use two-factor authentication. dijitul can put these basics in place quickly and remotely.

Our website was built by a volunteer who has left. Can you help?

Yes. dijitul regularly takes on inherited charity websites. We find the hosting, domain and admin logins, move them into the charity's name, take a backup, update the software and fix anything broken. Ongoing care is available from £25 a month + VAT.
