What we help with at home

Home technology has become as complicated as office IT, without anyone to ask. We regularly help with:

  • Slow or unreliable computers: start-up programs, full disks, failing drives, browser toolbars and unwanted software.
  • New laptops: setting up Windows or macOS, removing trial software, installing what you need and moving photos, documents and email from the old machine.
  • Email: Outlook, Gmail, iCloud and older internet provider email addresses that stop working after a change of broadband.
  • Wi-Fi and broadband: weak signal upstairs, devices that will not connect, and mesh systems. See Wi-Fi support.
  • Printers: offline printers, scanners, and wireless set-up. See printer support.
  • Phones and tablets: iPhone and Android set-up, transferring contacts and photos, and backups.
  • Safety: checking for viruses, removing scam software and setting up parental controls.

Windows 10 and older computers

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Home users could enrol in Extended Security Updates for one more year, and those free consumer updates end on 13 October 2026. After that, a Windows 10 PC keeps working but receives no more security fixes, which makes online banking and shopping on it riskier over time.

Windows 11 needs a TPM 2.0 security chip and a supported processor, so some older PCs cannot upgrade. We check your computer, tell you honestly whether it can run Windows 11, and if it can, do the upgrade and keep your files and programs. If it cannot, we help you choose a replacement that suits what you actually use it for, and move everything across. We do not sell computers, so there is no reason for us to push an upgrade you do not need. Apple users get similar help with macOS updates; see Mac support.

Scams, viruses and staying safe

Tech support scams are common: a phone call or pop-up claiming to be Microsoft, BT or your bank, saying your computer is infected or your internet will be cut off, then asking you to install remote access software. Genuine companies do not cold-call like this. If you have let someone in, switch the computer off, call your bank if you shared any card or banking details, and then let us check the machine.

We remove remote access tools the scammers installed, check for other unwanted software, change important passwords and turn on two-step verification for email and banking apps where available. We can also report the scam to Action Fraud with you.

Digital landlines and older relatives

Home phone lines are moving from the old copper network to digital voice, with the analogue network due to close on 31 January 2027. Most home phones simply plug into the router instead of the wall socket, but a few things need attention: the phone stops working in a power cut unless there is battery backup, and telecare alarms and some older devices need checking with their provider. We can help family members understand what changes and check equipment over a video call. More on the switch-off on our VoIP page.

Many people also ask us to help an elderly parent: setting up a simple tablet, adding family contacts, turning on automatic photo backup, and making sure scam calls are filtered. With permission, we can connect remotely to the relative's device while you are on the phone together.

How remote help works and what it costs

You call or email us, we arrange a time, and you download a small, safe screen-sharing app that we walk you through. You see everything we do and can end the session at any time. When we finish, the connection closes and cannot be reopened without you. Most home jobs are done this way, which keeps costs down.

Home IT support is £45 an hour + VAT, with a 30-minute minimum and then 15-minute blocks, so a quick fix costs the minimum. Get in touch on 01623 650333 or email support@dijitul.uk.

Frequently asked questions

Do you help home users or just businesses?

Both. dijitul support helps people at home with slow computers, new laptops, Wi-Fi, printers, email, scams, phones and tablets. Most jobs are done remotely while you watch. Home IT support is £45 an hour + VAT, with a 30-minute minimum.

Is it safe to keep using Windows 10?

Free consumer Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 end on 13 October 2026. After that, the PC gets no more security fixes, which makes it riskier for banking and shopping. dijitul can check whether your computer can upgrade to Windows 11, or help you replace it.

Someone from 'Microsoft' called and accessed my computer. What should I do?

Switch the computer off, contact your bank straight away if you shared any banking or card details, and do not let the caller back in. Then have the computer checked. dijitul removes any remote access tools, checks for other problems and helps you change passwords.

Can you set up my new laptop and move my files?

Yes. dijitul sets up new Windows laptops and Macs remotely, removes trial software, installs what you need, and moves photos, documents, email and browser bookmarks from the old computer. We do not sell computers, so we can advise impartially on what to buy.

How does remote computer help work?

You install a small screen-sharing app that we guide you through, then give us a code to connect. You see everything we do and can end the session at any time. Once we finish, we cannot reconnect without your permission.

Will my home phone work after the digital switchover?

Usually yes, by plugging it into your router instead of the wall socket. It may not work in a power cut without battery backup, and telecare alarms need checking with their provider. dijitul can help you and your family understand what changes.
