- £45 an hour + VAT ad hoc; plans from £25 a month + VAT; upgrades quoted
OpenCart versions and the PHP problem
OpenCart is a lightweight, free shopping cart that many small UK retailers chose years ago. Plenty of shops still run OpenCart 2.x or early 3.x on old PHP versions. As hosts withdraw PHP 7, those shops start throwing deprecation notices or fatal errors.
The project now maintains two branches: OpenCart 3.0.5.1 and OpenCart 4.1.0.4, both released in 2026 with PHP 8.5 compatibility. OpenCart 4 changed the extension structure substantially, so extensions written for 3.x will not run on 4.x without a new version from the developer.
OpenCart faults we fix
- Modification problems: OCMOD (and vQmod on older stores) patch core files at runtime. When two extensions modify the same line, one silently fails. We read the modification log, refresh the cache in Extensions > Modifications and resolve the conflict.
- API permission warning on orders: the API user's IP is missing from System > Users > API, often after a hosting move. We add the server IP.
- PHP 8 errors: old extensions using removed functions or old syntax. We patch the code or replace the extension.
- Checkout stuck: JavaScript errors from theme or extension conflicts, or a payment extension that does not support your OpenCart version.
- Admin session problems: session path, cookie or HTTPS setting mismatches in config.php and admin/config.php.
- Storage and error logs: huge error logs filling disk space, or the storage folder sitting inside the public web root.
Upgrading OpenCart
Upgrading from 2.x or 3.x to OpenCart 4 is less of an in-place update and more of a careful move. Our approach:
- Back up and copy the shop to staging.
- List every extension, theme and modification, and check whether a 4.x version exists.
- Upgrade the core and database on staging using OpenCart's upgrade script.
- Install the 4.x versions of extensions, or replace them; rebuild theme customisations.
- Test products, options, customer accounts, checkout, payments and order emails before going live.
Sometimes staying on the 3.x branch with PHP 8 fixes is the more practical option for a small shop. We give you both costs. Upgrades are quoted; see PHP version upgrade.
Keeping an OpenCart shop secure
We rename the admin folder if it is still /admin, move the storage directory outside the web root as OpenCart recommends, remove unused extensions, update the core and extensions, check user groups and permissions, and force HTTPS. If your shop is showing spam or redirects, or customers report card fraud, see malware removal.
Everyday OpenCart jobs
Beyond fixes, a lot of OpenCart support is routine shop work that owners do not have time for:
- Adding or bulk-importing products, options and categories.
- Setting up geo zones, tax classes and shipping methods so UK and international delivery rates are right.
- Configuring payment extensions for PayPal, Stripe or other gateways and testing them end to end.
- Creating coupons, vouchers and customer groups for trade pricing.
- Tidying SEO URLs, page titles and meta descriptions, which OpenCart sets per product and category.
- Clearing out old carts, sessions and logs that slow the admin.

Frequently asked questions
What is the latest version of OpenCart?
OpenCart 4.1.0.4 was released in August 2026, alongside 3.0.5.1 on the older branch, both adding PHP 8.5 compatibility. dijitul can check your version and advise whether to upgrade or patch.
Why do my OpenCart extension changes not show?
OCMOD modifications are cached. Go to Extensions > Modifications and click Refresh, then clear the theme cache. If changes still fail, another extension may be modifying the same code. dijitul traces and fixes these conflicts.
Will my OpenCart 3 extensions work on OpenCart 4?
No. OpenCart 4 uses a different extension structure, so each extension needs a 4.x version from its developer or a replacement. dijitul audits your extensions, checks which have 4.x releases and quotes the upgrade before any work starts.
How do I fix the OpenCart API permission warning?
Add your server's IP address to the API user under System > Users > API. It usually appears after moving hosts. dijitul can fix it quickly as a short ad-hoc job at £45 an hour + VAT.
Is OpenCart still a good choice?
For small catalogues with simple needs it still works well if kept updated. Shops needing many integrations may be better on WooCommerce or Shopify. dijitul gives an honest recommendation after looking at your setup.
